Annual Original One-Act Playwriting Competition is Now Open!

Theatre du Mississippi is excited to announce that submissions are now being accepted for our annual one-act playwriting competition!

  1. Plays must be original and unproduced scripts.
  2. Scripts must be one-act, short plays, approximately 10 to 60 minutes in run time.
  3. Playwrights must reside in the tri-state area of Minnesota, Wisconsin, or Iowa.
  4. Submissions must be nameless and free of identification.
  5. Any genre, theme, or style of play is acceptable.
  6. Consideration for ease of production (set design and cast size).

It’s free to submit, and if your play is selected to be performed, we offer a small royalties stipend!

We have two FREE virtual workshops that can be viewed asynchronously (on-demand) for ten days after the workshop date. Playwriting for Social Change and Memoir Monologues. Here is a bit about our facilitator: 

Kelsey Rain is a Native American playwright with an MFA in Theatre with an emphasis in Playwriting from University of Idaho, where she also studied indigenous theatre, queer theatre, feminist theatre, and theatre for social change. She has acted, sang, directed, and dramaturged professionally, but her true passion is creating original works. Two of her plays were Finalists for Native Voices Playwright retreat. She also assistant directed the play Marisol at Idaho State University, which received many KCACTF awards including one for creating a brave rehearsal space.

Description:
Discover the power of personal storytelling through the art of monologues. In this hands-on workshop, playwrights and actors will craft a rough draft of a monologue inspired by a significant event from their own lives or the lives of their family members. Guided by prompts and exercises, participants will explore how to transform personal experiences into compelling narratives for the stage. Whether you’re a seasoned writer, an actor looking to create your own material, or someone new to autobiographical storytelling, this workshop is a space to reflect, connect, and create.

Target Audience:
This workshop is open to beginners through advanced playwrights and actors with an interest in creating authentic, autobiographical work.
