2025 Fliehr Award Recipient
Lilydale
On March 9, at MACT*Fest 2025, we honored Gary Davis for the innumerable contributions he has made, and continues to make, as an actor, director, producer, board member, fundraiser, and all around champion of Minnesota community theater.
Gary is an unstoppable visionary who inspires others to believe in his dreams, and in themselves, and in the magic we can create together through theater.
Amy Luedtke wrote of Gary, “I first met Gary in 2009, when we were both cast in The Taming of the Shrew. It was one of the first shows that I acted in after a long hiatus, and Gary soon made me feel welcomed into the world of community theater. I’ve acted in many shows that Gary has directed, and Gary has given me some amazing opportunities as an actor and helped me accomplish things I didn’t think were possible. I think many other actors who have worked with Gary would say the same, and would agree that Gary is a supportive, patient, positive director who encourages actors to do their best. Gary always respects his cast members and crew and works collaboratively with them, while leading with a clear directorial vision.”
Gary has served for many years as a member of the Board for Applause Community Theatre. There Gary inspires people as leaders. Gary is steadfastly committed to Applause, and has helped shepherd it through many challenges and transitions. Today Applause is stronger than ever, thanks in large part to Gary’s inspirational can-do attitude. One of the greatest accomplishments of Applause that Gary has contributed to is the ongoing production of original plays by local playwrights. Gary has been a tireless fundraiser for Applause, with a recent and highly successful silent auction as their latest endeavor to raise funds to secure its future. Gary even recently wrote and published a recipe book to raise money for Applause, leveraging his talent as an award-winning cook.
Gary’s passion for theater has remained constant, even in the light of health concerns, including a recent cancer diagnosis. Gary did not let treatment for cancer stop him from actively participating in the leadership of Applause.
So many people in the Minnesota theater community have been inspired, supported, and mentored by Gary that it’s impossible to capture all he has contributed. While this award celebrates a “lifetime” of achievement, we look forward to seeing what Gary has yet to give.
