‘On The Verge’ is a hilarious and magical adventure by three intrepid lady travelers from 1888 into unknown territories. They meet everyone from a cannibal to a troll, to a rock and roll singer. During their journey they cover terrain such as the jungles of South America, to an Esso gas station, and they discover courage in themselves to launch out into an unknown future. book by John Weidman music & lyrics by Stephen Sondheim In this darkly humorous musical revue, Stephen Sondheim (music and lyrics) and John Weidman (book) depict nine misfit men and women who set out to assassinate American Presidents. Though only some were successful, all left their mark on American history. While every nation has its assassins and would-be assassins, only in America, the authors suggest, do disturbed and disturbing individuals act not because they hope to influence national politics, but because they are wrapped up in a malignant sense of entitlement. Feeling betrayed by the failed promise of American democracy and the American Dream, they strike out at the symbol for America: the American President. Assassins spans several musical styles and many decades in a dizzying series of musical and theatrical inventions that culminate in the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

by J. Emily Peabody Thorn Productions A biographical one-act about the first woman elected to Congress. A riveting performance that manages to pack nearly a century of history into each precious minute. With passion for reform, Jeannette Rankin was a thorn in the side of the establishment for 93 years. In 1916 she was the first woman elected to Congress from her home state of Montana. She voted against both World Wars. With grace and humor she battled for women’s suffrage, labor rights, social justice and the children, especially the children. A fascinating trip through the life of one of the strongest progressive voices of the last century.

music & lyrics by Bill Francoeur

Gangway, Pirates of the Caribbean — here come The Lady Pirates of Captain Bree! When his crew jumps ship upon sighting the pirates in the distance, Captain Jennings is left with a makeshift crew of motley prisoners and Fergus, a sailor who can’t swim, to protect his wealthy passengers, the Prescots, from the inevitable attack. As the lady pirates take over the defenseless Kayla May, you’re in for swashbuckling musical comedy with a host of hysterical characters on deck and a spectacular Bill Francoeur score. Along with Captain Bree’ hearty crew of mean and nasty mates (and a couple of new recruits in training who keep forgetting to be rough and tough), you’ll find the haughty Professor Bidwell and the pretentious Madam Prescot constantly battling for special treatment and respect (ha!) from the pirates, Samuel Prescot masquerading as a girl to avoid becoming shark bait, and Julia Prescot bursting with desire to join the lady pirates — much to her aunt’s dismay! After the pirates send Thomas, the cabin boy, out to sea with a ransom note demanding gold from the British in exchange for the Prescots’ lives, they amuse themselves by auctioning off the male prisoners to do their dirty work and showing Julia the ropes of pirating. But what is in store when Thomas returns with a British fleet, set on hanging the pirates for their deeds? Madam Prescot and Bidwell are equally set on seeing Captain Jennings hang for his defenseless approach to the lady pirates. Both your cast and your audience will love the swashbuckling ending as the two captains work together to save their crews from the British.

Bill Francoeur’s zesty music adds the perfect touch of authenticity to this spirited pirate play. From the suspense of ’The Plank’ when Professor Bidwell’s life is in the pirates’ hands to the belly laughs of ’Shipshape and Bristol Fashion’ when the pirates order the grumbling prisoners to swab the decks, your audiences will be humming the catchy sea shanties, including ’Welcome Aboard!’ and ’They’re a Nasty Lot.’

A Senior on Stage production. When the biggest highlight in your life for the past 30 years has been your weekly bridge night out with the “girls,” what do you do when one of your foursome inconveniently dies? If you’re Connie, Leona and Millie, three southern ladies from Birmingham, you do the most daring thing you’ve ever done. You “borrow” the ashes from the funeral home for one last card game, and the wildest, most exciting night of your lives involves a police raid, a stripper and a whole new way of looking at all the fun you can have when you’re truly living. AACT NewPlayFest 2014 winner.

by William shakespeare For the Fall production, something wicked this way comes when CLFTC presents William Shakespeare’s Scottish tragedy of “Macbeth,” Co-directed by Greg Bastien and Noreen K. Brandt. A brave Scottish general named Macbeth receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders King Duncan and takes the Scottish throne for himself. He is then wracked with guilt and paranoia. Forced to commit more and more murders to protect himself from enmity and suspicion, he soon becomes a tyrannical ruler. The bloodbath and consequent civil war swiftly take Macbeth and Lady Macbeth into the realms of madness and death.

Hilltop Hall

On eight Sundays during the year, there’s a little bit of magic in Montgomery, Minnesota.  (There are no shows in January, February, July and December.) Early in the afternoon, a two-story brick building with “1892” inscribed near the peak of its roof opens its doors, and the aroma of fresh buttered popcorn beckons from the second story. Music and laughter echo throughout the vintage concert hall as musicians rehearse and patrons begin to stroll in and claim seats. Promptly at 4 pm, the fun begins. Led by proprietor John Grimm, a troupe of performers gathers on stage to join in a lively theme song during which members are introduced. For the next two hours, guests enjoy a diverse mix of music and entertainment ranging from popular standards to concert hall classics; from goofy comedy and colorful costumes to inspirational gospel and harmonic collaborations. At intermission, fresh piping-hot pizza from Pizzeria 201 is available for two bucks a slice, served with friendly smiles at “Shannon’s Snack Bar” (the kitchenette at the back of the hall). The regular troupe members hail from Green Isle, Montgomery, New Prague, Northfield, and Rosemount; guest performers occasionally appear as well. The audience, which generally numbers between 75 and 150, consists mainly of self-proclaimed “groupies” that have made this event a regular ritual. Buses often arrive from distant locations, and since the series began in March of 2012, faithful guests have become acquainted and enjoy mingling at intermission. First-time visitors are generally mesmerized by the warm splendor of the hall, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. Host John Grimm purchased the building in the early 1990’s “to save a significantly historic building” and “to create a place where local folks could perform.”
