This murder mystery is not a normal stage play. It is part scripted – part improv – all fun. Actors will mingle with guests who are seated at their tables. The action takes place around the room and chatting up the guests in character is encouraged. The mystery unfolds throughout the evening through character conversations, arguments, accusations, and yes murder. The set up: The Rusty Spur Ranch, a dusty event barn nestled in the outskirts of town, hosts its annual Wild West barn dance-known for cheap whiskey, rowdy music, and a little too much gossip. What was supposed to be a night of boot-scootin’ fun turns deadly when the infamous ranch owner, Buck Beauregard, is murdered.

A story that proves how family is fraught, never really what it appears, and, despite it all, so very necessary. Benjamin’s “No Matter What You Tell Me” has previously toured to Las Vegas and Oregon and comes to Grand Marais in November as it appears at multiple venues across Minnesota. “This heartfelt story of family and self-realization will pull you in and challenge your assumptions. Boucvalt is such a strong performer, incredibly natural and engaging; a great storyteller. Well worth checking out!” —Art Vegas Benjamin’s work is well known to audiences who have visited the Great River Shakespeare Festival where he has performed for 13 years. Notable performances include Orlando in As You Like It, Cassius in Julius Caesar, Oberon in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Leontes in TheWinter’s Tale, and Romeo in Romeo and Juliet. On eight Sundays during the year, there’s a little bit of magic in Montgomery, Minnesota. Early in the afternoon, a two-story brick building with “1892” inscribed near the peak of its roof opens its doors, and the aroma of fresh buttered popcorn beckons from the second story. Music and laughter echo throughout the vintage concert hall as musicians rehearse and patrons begin to stroll in and claim seats. Promptly at 4 p.m., the fun begins. Led by proprietor John Grimm, a troupe of performers gathers on stage to join in a lively theme song during which members are introduced. For the next two hours, guests enjoy a diverse mix of music and entertainment ranging from popular standards to concert hall classics; from goofy comedy and colorful costumes to inspirational gospel and harmonic collaborations. At intermission, fresh piping-hot pizza from Pizzeria 201 is available for two bucks a slice, served with friendly smiles at “Shannon’s Snack Bar” (the kitchenette at the back of the hall).
