Written by Miguel Fiol Directed by Joe Moses The Chrysalis (a play in English) is a family drama set in 1990s Puerto Rico during the tumultuous AIDS epidemic. American pharmaceutical companies on the island were reaping tax-free profits by making life-saving AIDS medications that most Boricuas (Puerto Rican natives) could not afford. The father (Eduardo) has to weigh the advantages of working for the Americans against the costs to his family after Raul’s friend faces exile, conversion therapy, and fatal illness and everyone in the family has to face difficult questions at the very heart of their identities. The youngest son, Raul, reveals plans to come out to his family on his 21st birthday until his late grandparents, both former activists for Puerto Rican independence, intervene. The story traces family conflicts to Spanish colonialism, the enslavement of Ghanaians, religious influences, and American political and economic (sugar cane) power. The family struggles to understand what it means to stand up for who they are as Puerto Ricans until Raul’s brother Francisco risks everything to protect the family (the chrysalis) from a home-grown menace. Miguel Fiol is a Puerto Rican playwright and activist who works on behalf of the Puerto Rican people on the island and in Minnesota. Miguel is the founder of The Fiol Family Foundation, which supports historical, cultural, and scientific activities to improve lives on the island and diaspora. Miguel makes several trips to Puerto Rico each year to deliver medical care and supplies in his native Ponce. The Chrysalis has been recognized as a promising new work by the Miranda Family Foundation National Playwriting Competition in New York City and by Teatro del Pueblo in St. Paul. Joe Moses helped usher The Chrysalis from Miguel’s initial novel translation into English in 2012, serving as editor, to the stage adaptation serving as dramaturg and development coordinator.

This lunatic show poses a fascinating mystery. When Barnaby Folcey is murdered at a family gathering at Marlgate Manor, it transpires that he had a motive to murder everybody else, but no one had a reason to want him dead. While dying, he scrawled the letters “b-a-r,” which can implicate everyone. While the bizarre group frantically tries to unmask the murderer, people vanish, poison is found in the sherry, and the police take forever to arrive. Meanwhile, there’s a secret treasure to be found, a mystifying limerick to decode, and all sorts of doom to be avoided before the killer is finally unmasked and destroyed using one of the funniest methods ever seen on a stage.

Book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller & Marshall Barer Music by Mary Rodgers Lyrics by Marshall Barer One of the funniest Broadway shows of all time, Once Upon a Mattress tells the story of the princess and the pea through song, dance and flawless comedic timing. This show launched the incredible careers of Carol Burnett and Sarah Jessica Parker, so there is a hint of magic too! Join us next summer for a trip back to a time of castles, knights and sleepless princesses! Many moons ago in a far-off place, Queen Aggravain decreed no couples could marry until her son, Prince Dauntless, found a bride. Princesses came from far and wide to win the hand of the prince, but none could pass the impossible tests given to them by the Queen. That is, until the “shy” swamp princess, Winnifred the Woebegone, showed up. Would she be able to pass the Sensitivity Test, marry her prince and help Lady Larkin and Sir Harry to the altar? Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the classic tale The Princess and the Pea provides some side-splitting shenanigans. For after all, a princess is a delicate thing.

The Book of Mark is a dramatic one-man staging of the biblical Book of Mark. The Book of Mark tells the story of Jesus’s ministry, from His baptism to His death to His resurrection. Compared to the other gospels, Mark’s account of Jesus’s life is the most straightforward as a narrative and focuses most on the acts, miracles, and deeds of Christ. Originally performed as a stage production by acclaimed stage actor Alec McCowen, Mark has since been staged by many actors across the globe, reminding audiences of the historically momentous wonder and transformative redemptive power of the story of Jesus Christ. Performances will be June 26 – 29 at the Dassel History Center, with performances at 7pm Thursday – Friday and a Sunday Matinee offered on June 29 at 2pm. There will be no tickets but a freewill donation will be taken. All proceeds from this production will be donated to the Meeker County and Cokato Food Shelves.

On eight Sundays during the year, there’s a little bit of magic in Montgomery, Minnesota. Early in the afternoon, a two-story brick building with “1892” inscribed near the peak of its roof opens its doors, and the aroma of fresh buttered popcorn beckons from the second story. Music and laughter echo throughout the vintage concert hall as musicians rehearse and patrons begin to stroll in and claim seats. Promptly at 4 p.m., the fun begins. Led by proprietor John Grimm, a troupe of performers gathers on stage to join in a lively theme song during which members are introduced. For the next two hours, guests enjoy a diverse mix of music and entertainment ranging from popular standards to concert hall classics; from goofy comedy and colorful costumes to inspirational gospel and harmonic collaborations. At intermission, fresh piping-hot pizza from Pizzeria 201 is available for two bucks a slice, served with friendly smiles at “Shannon’s Snack Bar” (the kitchenette at the back of the hall). Performances for 2025 will be: March 30 April 27 May 18 June 29 August 31 September 28 October 26 November 30
